Wasserburg's urban space is surrounded by the beautiful Lake Constance. Lake Constance gives Wasserburg its urban life and spirit. However, after years of urban development, the connection between Wasserburg and Lake Constance has become increasingly distant, rather than closer. Today, the first thing we need to do in our urban transformation is to re-strengthen the connection between the city and the water, especially the connection between the city center and the harbor area in the southwest corner of the city. By using parametric analysis of space, we obtained the results of the accessibility and integration analysis of the urban open space. Through the analysis, the urban space has been improved, and the direction for the specific transformation design has been pointed out.
The transformation of Wasserburg's waterfront space will directly improve the quality of life for local residents and tourists in the city's shared open space. The harbor area, located in the southwest corner of the city, is not only an important urban dock area close to Lake Constance, but also a dense area of public buildings and historical buildings. In the strip of open space close to the lake, different groups of people share this space. How to make different users get a more comfortable and high-quality spatial environment in a shared open space has become the starting point of this design.
We divided the user groups into six categories: sailing schools; fishermen; vacationers and tourists; local residents; festival performances; and church life. We also made a forecast analysis of the flow of people and space use in this open space based on the living habits and routes of the six groups of people. After appropriate transformation of the shoreline, the accessibility of the space was improved, which in turn made the square space in the dock area gain a more important position.
A new urban design concept gradually took shape: that is, to create a pure outdoor open space here, a pure space that is almost like an urban stage. This space presents pure emptiness, thus gaining great possibilities and placing the beautiful scenery of Lake Constance in front of us. Like the space of the universe, although this space looks empty, it is restrained by different force fields. After precise computer calculation, the flow lines and intensity ranges of different user groups are converted into three spatial categories: fast passing, performance and leisure. These three categories are then converted into six types of ground paving materials with different properties. The six types of ground paving materials are combined with the embankment design to eventually form Wasserburg's unprecedented urban dock - an empty but powerful urban space - a precisely calculated social living space. It leaves beauty to the city and the water of Lake Constance, and humility to itself.
